1. The Wine Experience

When I think of Margaret River, what comes to mind first is its famous wineries. To get around you can self-drive, you just need a designated driver so you can relax and taste as many wines as you can handle. But a better option is to take advantage of an experienced local tour expert.

We let Harvest Tours, run by a couple with a passion for showing where the locals like to buy their wine and food, take the mystery out of choosing for us with one of their informative tours. They call themselves the “Foodie’s wine tour with a conscience”.

Recommended wineries:

  • Peacetree Estate - Excellent wines and an organic wine tasting experience.
  • Cowaramup Wines - Located in the heart of the Margaret River wine region with a strong emphasis on implementing biodynamic and organic practices in the vineyard.
  • Settlers Ridge - Australia’s first internationally certified winery for organic wines.
  • Margaret River Providor - Not just about wine tasting. Voted one of Australia’s Top 100 Gourmet Experiences with fresh ingredients sourced from their vegetable gardens.
  • Adinfern Estate - Centrally located and well-known local family with award winning wines.

2. The Beer Experience

For the lovers of beer, Eagle Bay Brewing Co is a family run boutique operation and you can really feel their passion. All their beers are made with fresh rainwater, malted barley, yeast and hops - no preservatives or nasty stuff. And their food is top notch too. Sit on the outside patio area with expansive views for a beer and lunch.

3. The Chocolate Experience

If you're a chocoholic like me, you'll be excited to learn about Gabriel’s Chocolates. Gabriel has a passion for chocolate and creates his awesomely fine chocolate from freshly roasted cacao beans from six regions around the world. The end result, exquisite chocolates with flavors reflecting their regions. He was the first bean to bar chocolate maker in Western Australia.

4. The Movie Experience

Imagine this…a stary night sky, a picnic blanket, a gourmet hamper, and a movie on the big screen inside vineyard. This is all possible at Cape Mentelle Vineyards. It's Margaret River’s only outdoor movie cinema and a truly memorable experience.

5. The Beaches

Some of the best surf beaches in Australia are located in the region. There's famous Margaret River Mouth which is home to the Margaret River Pro surfing event, and Geographe Bay beaches in Dunsborough, but my favourite is beautiful Yallingup Beach. Check out these other surf spots.

6. The Cape to Cape Track

The Cape-to-Cape Walking Track is a 140 kilometre trail through the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park taking in stunning coastal cliffs, beaches and woodlands. The whole walk usually takes 5 – 7 days, but multiple access points allows day trekkers to complete small segments. For self-guided and guided tours visit Cape to Cape Explorer Tours.

7. Nigili Cave

Explore the ancient wonders of Ngilgi Cave beneath the limestone ridge which forms Cape Naturaliste. A wonderful cave with walkways well laid and lighting strategically placed to bring out the best in the cave. The Amphitheatre is especially impressive.

8. Samudra Kombi Cafe

After drinking and eating your way through Margaret River, get health conscious again at Samudra, an all-in-one vegetarian cafe, wellness studio, yoga centre and health retreat. This is the perfect place to unwind in a beautiful garden setting.

9. Whale Watching

Visit Geographe Bay between May and December for the chance to sight humpback and blue whales. At other times you can spot dolphins and fur seals, explore secluded caves, bird life, limestone cliffs and picturesque beaches with Naturaliste Charters.
