Broome, Western Australia

The Kimberley is worth a visit at any time of year, but Broome is particularly inviting in May. The climate here doesn't really fall into the typical four seasons, and is often categorised as either dry or wet. May sits comfortably within the dry season, bringing with it perfect weather. Expect warm, sunny days and temperatures topping 30 degree Celsius, with cooler nights to help keep you fresh.

Make the most of the blue skies and explore Broome's many natural attractions, including the famous Cable Beach. Spend lazy days relaxing on the 22-kilometre strip of startlingly white sand, with azure waters lapping at your feet and red cliffs providing a stunning backdrop.

Broome also has a fascinating history which harks back to Aboriginal communities and pearl diving, all of which can be discovered when you holiday here.

Phillip Island

Nature lovers will love Phillip Island, particularly in May when the crowds are typically smaller than usual.

The favourable weather means you can explore this nature-rich region to your heart's content. The scenery here is exquisite, and the island's collection of animals such as kangaroos and emus is impressive. It has a colony of Little Penguins that tourists flock to each year, and tours have been set up to offer eco-friendly ways to see these tiny creatures in their natural habitat. Their nightly Penguin Parade is particularly memorable, where the penguins return from their beach and up to their roosts.

Explore the Nobbies area, which has wooden walkways on which you can walk around the headland comfortable and efficiently. Don't miss the blowhole that spurts water into the air during large ocean swells.

Canberra

While the weather is cooler in Canberra during May, with temperatures hitting highs of around 16 degrees, there's more than enough incentive to head to the nation's capital at this time of year. One major drawcard is the Canberra International Music Festival, which has been held annually since 1997 after being founded in 1994. It's held over a 10-day period in May each year and highlights Canberra's national institutes and architectural spaces with concerts, films and lectures.

The early days of the festival focused on chamber music, but modern iterations have expanded to include contemporary, jazz, classical and world music. Acoustic performances are a real highlight of the festival, which sees audiences of around 10,000 attend ticketed and non-ticketed events each year.

While you're in Canberra, check out some of Australia's most significant attractions such as the Australian War Memorial, Old Parliament House, National Gallery of Australia, Australian National Botanic Gardens and the National Museum of Australia.
