Touch the Clouds in Canberra

Ranked as one of the top ballooning events in the world, the Canberra Balloon Festival is spectacular to see from the ground or the sky. Listen to live music performances each morning as balloon pilots prepare and fill their rides. Then watch as balloons of all colors take to the sky. Spectators are welcome to take a ride and catch a view of the city’s noteworthy architecture from above. Back on the ground, Canberra boasts a lively bar scene thanks to its many university students.

Admire the Foliage in the Dandenong Ranges

If the sight of orange, red, and yellow leaves makes you sigh with appreciation, then March is the month to visit the Dandenong Ranges. Just 35 kilometers from Melbourne, the national park is ablaze in autumn with the changing colors of leaves. The Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens is especially worth a visit, as its manicured lawns become carpeted with fallen leaves. Pack your hiking boots as well as your camera—the well-marked trails here do not disappoint. And if you drive up to the highest point in the Dandenongs at dusk, the view of Melbourne’s lights is amazing.

Rev Your Engines in Adelaide

In March, the streets of the east end of Adelaide are home to the Clipsal 500, an annual race for V8 supercars. The four-day event attracts the largest domestic racing crowds in the country and includes a packed off-track schedule of concerts, air displays and attractions. Join the nearly quarter million motorsports fans, then stick around for the City of Churches’ other draws: the Adelaide Zoo, home to 1,800 exotic and native creatures; the Art Gallery of South Australia, which claims most of the big names in the country’s art world; and the Adelaide Oval, hailed as the world’s prettiest cricket ground.

Ogle the Aquarium in Perth

When it’s time to hang up your swimsuit but you’re not quite ready to say goodbye to the sea, think Perth. The Aquarium of Western Australia’s huge underwater tunnels let visitors enjoy the ocean’s creatures up close no matter the weather outside. Take a stroll past stingrays, sharks, turtles, fish, octopi, shells and sea snakes. You can also don a wetsuit and dive in with the sharks. Beyond the aquarium, laid back Perth has all the makings of a fantastic holiday: upscale eateries, regional art galleries and extensive coastline tours and offerings.

Feast on Tasmania

An explosion of swish hotels and gourmet restaurants has upped the sophistication factor of this southern island, which boasts wonderfully moderate weather in March. Yet Tasmania still manages to skirt the tourist trappings and lengthy queues that can drag down a holiday. With the capital of Hobart as your home base, you can easily explore much of the island. The Tamar Valley’s climate is similar to those of the Champagne region in France, making it a fantastic spot for a winery visit.
