Catch a Parade in Sydney

Sydney’s home to two phenomenal cultural celebrations in February—and either alone would be worthy of a holiday. The Chinese New Year celebrations in Sydney stretch into three weeks of festivities. During the dragon races, you can cheer on competitors from the water’s edge to the backdrop of drums. Feast on a special lunar menu to usher in good luck for the New Year. And, enjoy a special twilight parade packed with lanterns, floats, and light projections.

Outside of Chinatown, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from across Australia. In addition to the film festival, Bondi Beach drag races, and academic talks, the Mardi Gras Parade is considered the highlight of this LGBTQ pride event.

Sip Your Way Across the Yarra Valley

The relative cool of Victoria’s vineyards offers great weather in February, and the Yarra Valley is the state’s oldest and most popular wine region. More than 80 wineries dot the valley, though visitors looking to make the most of their holiday will want to concentrate on the valley’s “wine triangle” bounded by Healesville, Yarra Glen, and Coldstream. In addition to visiting cellar doors and sipping pinot noir, hot air balloon rides are a popular activity in the area.

Get Outdoors on Kangaroo Island

Top off your summer with a low-key holiday that’s clear of the stifling heat in the north. Wilderness and wildlife fans flock to Kangaroo Island for the dolphins, seals, birds, echidnas, and—as the name so clearly states—kangaroos and its 509 kilometres of pristine coastline. Though it remains blissfully underdeveloped compared to mainland towns, the pint-sized island boasts some impressive culinary offerings. Look for fresh sheep’s cheese, fresh-caught fish like King George Whiting, and a number of locally produced wine varietals.

Swim Your Heart Out in Busselton

If you spent the summer in the water (or even if you didn’t), the Busselton Jetty Swim is a great excuse to suit up and swim. Join the 1,750 other competitors of all ages and skill levels who swim the 3.6-kilometre race around the iconic Busselton Jetty (the longest in the Southern Hemisphere). This February event attracts travelers across Australia with more than just a race: Expect daily musical concerts, family activities like egg tosses and three-legged runs, and a surprisingly impressive number of nearby vineyards worth a visit.

Feast on Melbourne

Melbourne is a chic cultural hotspot year-round, but in late February, nearly 350,000 foodies descend upon the city for the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival. Partake in more than 200 tastings, talks, and special restaurant events alongside some of the biggest oenophiles and food lovers in the world. When you’ve had your fill, head to the water’s edge. Though the city’s beaches can be awfully crowded during the peak of summer, they’re pleasant and welcoming come February.
