Whale Watching

If you think spyhopping sounds like something in the realms of a James Bond action flick, think again. The humpback whales that congregate in the waters off the Fraser Coast have trademarked the move. These international mammals of mystery are renowned for poking their heads out of the water in a ‘spyhop’ pose to eyeball awed tourists. Hervey Bay is a mecca for humpbacks, with about 17,000 making their way through these waters from July to November on their annual return migration to Antarctica. Witnessing these supersized beasts of the ocean on a boat excursion is an unforgettable experience, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better whale watching location.

Whale Watching in Hervey Bay

Fraser Island

World Heritage-listed Fraser Island is a mind-boggling wilderness of long white-sand beaches, rolling dunes, ancient rainforest and freshwater lakes. And it’s just a stone’s throw from Hervey Bay, making a daytrip to the world’s largest sand island a mandatory excursion for any visitor. Join an organised day tour or, if you have your own four-wheel drive, catch the ferry and enjoy a self-guided adventure. Cruise along Seventy-Five Mile Beach, take a dip at Lake McKenzie or at one of 100 other freshwater lakes, marvel at the coloured sands, picnic in the rainforest or enjoy a spot of fishing.

Wetside Water Education Park

Who says you can’t surf in Hervey Bay? At the WetSide Water Education Park you can hang ten without getting sand in your togs. The free water park packs barrels of aquatic fun with a water conservation message. Test your nerves in the Flipside BoardRider wave pool ($6) or watch the littlies make a splash at the wet playground, equipped with jets and a giant sea creature sculpture.

Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum

Step back in time and experience life as an early settler at the multi-award winning Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum. Roam the museum’s extensive grounds, exploring 21 buildings from yesteryear and more than 12,000 artefacts. Step into the shoes of Australia’s first settlers and learn what life was like in the early days during a corn shelling or wood turning demonstration.

Hervey Bay Esplanade

Pound the pavement or enlist some pedal power on a self-guided venture along the esplanade walk and cycle trail. The 14 kilometre-long pathway from Urangan Harbour at the eastern end of the city to Gatakers Bay in the west boasts stunning sea views across to Fraser Island. Wander through The Gables at Col Gardner Memorial Park, visit the Butchulla Aboriginal Monument and stop for a swim at picturesque Scarness Beach, before arriving at historic Urangan Pier for a spot of lunch and people watching.
