1. Study a Living Reef on Dry Land

More than 130 coral and 120 fish species call Reef HQ Aquarium home, and guided tours and talks are available throughout the day. Kids will especially love the turtle hospital, where they can feed and touch the shelled creatures. Definitely at the top of the things to do in Townsville.

2. Hike Castle Hill

Townsville sprawls at the base of this 460-kilometre red hill, which provides both excellent hiking trails and fantastic views of the city and Cleveland Bay. Signs at the hill’s summit show various trails leading to lookout points.

3. Visit the Museum of Tropical Queensland

From dinosaurs to rainforest areas and coral reefs to early settlements, this museum covers the vast history of North Queensland. Interactive displays help set it apart. Visitors can load and fire a cannon, and kids can get their hands dirty at the MindZone Science Centre.

4. Get Up Close With Animals at Billabong Sanctuary

This eco-certified wildlife park is home to native creatures like koalas, red kangaroos, dingoes, and cassowaries. A mere 17 kilometres from Townsville, the 11-hectare park offers animal talks and shows throughout the day.

5. Stop By the Cultural Centre

The pint-sized Cultural Centre Townsville showcases the history and traditions of the indigenous Bindal and Wulgurukaba people. Check the calendar for dance and theatre performances, Didgeridoo workshops, and guided tours.

6. Soak Up Sun at the Waterfront

Townsville’s 2.2-kilometre stretch of shady, palm-studded waterfront is chock full of pools, cafes, parks and playgrounds. Set foot on the gold-sanded beaches and you’ll understand why locals spend entire days here. The Olympic-sized Tobruk Memorial Baths is heritage-listed. Does lazing on the beach qualify as a thing to do in Towsnville? Regardless, its a part of experiencing the relaxed culture of Townsvillle.

7. Stop and Smell the Flowers

Spread across three locations, Townsville’s botanic gardens are studded with tropical plants and winding, walkable paths. Anderson Garden is the biggest at 25 hectares, while the Palmetum includes one of the world’s largest collections of palms. The smaller Queens Garden at the base of Castle Hill is the most formal. Full of colorful flowers, it’s focused on colonial ornamental plants.

8. Study the Sea

If boats are your thing, the Maritime Museum of Townsville is a must-visit. Take a tour of the decommissioned patrol boat HMAS Townsville, wander the gallery dedicated to the wreck of the Yongala, and check out the Model Boat room dedicated to handmade models.

9. Take in Some Local Art

The Perc Tucker Regional Gallery showcases rotating exhibits of North Queensland artists. Housed in a 19th century former bank, the gallery is spacious and family-friendly.

10. Marvel at Jourama Falls

Pack a picnic and spend some time studying the gorgeous geology of this breathtaking waterfall located inside Paluma National Park. Turtles inhabit the pools below, and walking trails make getting up close to the falls easy.
