Noosa Heads

Noosa Heads is where the region’s more well to do come to live, stay and play. Fringed by Laguna Bay, Noosa National Park and the Noosa River, the leafy low-rise coastal village is chic and understated at the same time. The tourist action centres around Hastings Street – a pedestrian-friendly promenade of cafes, boutiques and resort frontages – and Noosa Main Beach, a picture-postcard seafront popular with surfers and sunworshippers. Grab a latte in one of the al-fresco cafes in the morning, pick up a designer ensemble and then hit the beach. In the afternoon pack a picnic and hike through the national park, stop off to swim in sheltered coves along the way and enjoy the views across the headland - definitely one of the best things to do on the Sunshine Coast.

It may be called the Sunshine Coast, but don’t be deceived; many of region’s gems can be found in the hinterland far from the sun-kissed beaches and breaking waves. Maleny and Montville are quaint mountain villages where you can enjoy a Devonshire tea and peruse shops brimming with unusual trinkets, home wares and specialty items. Enjoy spectacular coastal views during a scenic drive along the Blackall Range before stopping off at Kondalilla Falls. Here, you can enjoy a barbecue in the sprawling picnic grounds and then walk to a swimming hole at the top of the falls for a dip. Closer to Maleny, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a must-visit pocket of subtropical rainforest with views of the Glass House Mountains.

Eumundi Markets

With more than 600 stalls and 1.6 million annual visitors, Eumundi Markets are a Sunshine Coast institution. The markets operate on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, with stall holders selling a multitude of produce and products under the “make it, bake it, grow it, sew it” banner. Peruse artwork and handmade jewellery, sample skincare products, and try locally designed clothing out for size. Grab a serve of calamari and wash it down with a glass of old-fashioned lemonade while musicians and statue performers entertain the crowds.

Australia Zoo

From the entrance, Australia Zoo looks like a small wildlife park, but don’t be fooled. The grounds are vast and the zoo is constantly expanding. Whether or not you are a fan of the late Crocodile Hunter, you will be impressed with Steve Irwin’s vision and legacy. The zoo is home to more than 150 species of animals, including tigers, giraffes and, of course, crocodiles. The croc show in the famous Crocoseum is a hair-raising experience, and there are also plenty of opportunities to interact with wildlife. Cuddle a koala, ride a camel, get cosy with a giant python or hand-feed a hungry wombat.

Mount Coolum

It’s a landmark that dominates the Sunshine Coast skyline, but Mount Coolum attracts few visitors. Perhaps it’s because the sparkling beaches nearby tempt lazy days in the sun. Whatever the reason, Mount Coolum remains one of the Sunshine Coast’s best kept secrets. The walk to the 208-metre dome-like summit takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Once on top you can enjoy sweeping 360-degree views across the Sunshine Coast extending from Noosa in the north to the Blackall Ranges in the east and the high rise buildings of Caloundra in the south.
