1. Motor Sports

Phillip Island is renowned for its motor sports. Visit during February for the Swann Round FIM Superbike World Championship, which brings the categories of Australian Superbike, Australian Supersport, Moto3/125GP and the Australian Juniors to Phillip Island. This Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is also worth visiting, with a huge annual calendar of public events.

2. Surfing

Phillip Island National Surfing Reserve has a range of waves for all levels of abilities, with surf clinics and tournaments hosted throughout the year. Woolamai is its most well-known stretch of beach, with breaks including Forrest Caves and Magic Lands and seasonal winds enhancing the surf conditions.

3. Penguin Parade

See wild penguins at world-famous Penguin Parade, where you can also enjoy interactive displays and walk through a penguin colony straight to the beach. Keep your eyes peeled for the penguin burrows to spot napping or returning animals.

4. Island Summer Carnival

For one month in summer and during the Labour Day long weekend, Phillip Island is host to the Island Summer Carnival. Take the kids to test their mettle on the Space Roller, Midnight Madness and Kamikaze rides, compete with the family on the Dodgem Cars and top it all off with a jam doughnut and toffee apple.

5. Whale Watching

Whales migrate along Phillip Island's southern coastline from June each year. Look out for humpback and southern right whales making the journey across Victoria, and take to the sea, air or land for close glimpses of them. Whale cruises take place during the weekends of the migration season, and helicopter tours are also available.

6. Markets

There are many local markets to be found around Phillip Island, including nearby Churchill Island's farmer's market on the fourth Saturday of each month. Here you can find locally grown and produced goods, while you can purchase crafts, clothes and produce from the Cowes Island Craft Market on the second Saturday of every month.

7. Bird Watching

Bird watchers can spot migrating mutton birds as they fly over Cape Woolamai at sunset between September and late April. Venture to the San Remo beach to see a daily pelican feeding. Migratory wading birds, such as straw-necked ibis and hooded plover, can also been found in the Rhyll Inlet and wetlands.

8. Wineries

Rhyll's Purple Hen Winery is family-owned and-operated and produces decadent cool climate wines. Drop by the Cellar Door to sample some, and dine on the snacks listed on the accompanying blackboard menu.

9. Koala Conservation Centre

The Koala Conservation Centre offers a treetop boardwalk for you to roam and discover koalas in their natural habitat. You may also spot koala joeys in their mothers' pouches, and there's a vast expanse of wetland for you to explore. 3
