Shop ’Til You Drop

Wet weather is a great excuse to lose yourself in Melbourne’s labyrinth of laneways, which not only harbour great bars and cafes, but are also home to some fabulous boutique shops. Grab a brolly and wander down hidden cobbled streets for one-of-a-kind finds.

If it’s really bucketing down, take shelter in the GPO, home to Australia’s first H&M store, or at nearby Emporium Melbourne, a purse-stretching precinct housing local and international designers, located next to Myer and David Jones.

On the other side of the Emporium, you’ll find Melbourne Central, a multi-level shopping centre comprising more than 300 stores that has as its centrepiece a historic nine-storey shot tower, preserved under a giant glass dome.

Eureka Skydeck

Brace yourself for the greatest, most adrenaline-packed view of Melbourne from atop the highest public viewing deck in the Southern Hemisphere. At Eureka Skydeck you can enjoy 360-degree views of the city and surrounds from 285 metres above the streets.

Ride the elevator to the 88th floor, take advantage of the free audio tours and head out onto the terrace to feel the wind whistle through your hair. For the ultimate adrenaline fix, step out onto The Edge in a retractable glass cube as it dangles high above the city.

Eureka Tower Views

Grab a bite to eat in the kiosk or at Eureka 89 restaurant. Or, for a special treat, dine at upmarket Vue de monde, owned by famous Australian chef Shannon Bennett.

National Sports Museum

If it’s too wet to enjoy one of Melbourne’s many sporting events, don’t despair – the National Sports Museum will give you in-depth insight into the country’s greatest games and contests. Housed at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the museum features interactive exhibitions and memorabilia from some of the country’s best sportsmen and women.

Melbourne Museum

If it poured for a year and you visited the Melbourne Museum every day, you would still not have enough time to fully appreciate each of the more than 16 million specimens and artefacts on display. The six-level attraction is the largest museum complex in the Southern Hemisphere and features eight permanent galleries (including one for children), a living outdoor rainforest and an IMAX theatre, as well as a number of touring exhibitions.

National Gallery of Victoria

There’s nothing like a splash of watercolour to brighten up your day when the skies are gloomy. At the NGV you can enjoy more than 70,000 artworks in a collection that spans thousands of years and a multitude of disciplines and styles. Spread across two buildings – separating Australian works from international artists – the gallery features a range of permanent collections, special exhibitions, programs and events.

It also has a fantastic interactive children’s zone where the little ones can make their own animated film; and best of all, it’s free.
