Hit the Slopes

The Snowy Mountains experience large natural snowfalls every year, making this one of Australia’s hot spots for skiing during winter months. The two most popular resorts are Thredbo and Perisher. At 672 metres, Thredbo has one of the largest vertical drops of any Australian ski resort. The massive Perisher has nearly 50 lifts and four village base areas spread over 1,245 hectares.

Explore History at the Thredbo Ski Museum

Tucked away at the northern end of the Thredbo Alpine Hotel, this small gem of a museum is a great way to warm up from the cold and take a break from outdoor pursuits. Despite the name, it’s more focused on the history of the Snowy Mountains than the sport of skiing.

Take in the Scenery

The Snowy Mountains Highway and Alpine Way wind their way through Kosciuszko National Park, a 673,492-hectare green space that sprawls across the Snowies. It’s worth a drive to take in the scenery alone, from limestone gorges and caves to historic homesteads and alpine flowers. Immaculate walking trails beckon in the spring and summer, making the park a go-to spot for cyclists and mountain bikers alike. If you’re incredibly lucky, you might catch sight of the mountain pygmy possum. This is the only place on earth where the animal lives.

Spend Some Time in Cooma

This laid-back town comes alive during ski season thanks to its proximity to the slopes. Ski bunnies head here to hang out in the country town’s centre and grab a bite to eat from its many bakeries and cafes. Want to stretch your visit into a day trip? The Cooma-Monaro railway operates a historical tourist train, which runs along the railway line. The New South Wales Corrective Services Museum is another popular attraction, and with good reason. Located next to the functioning Cooma Gaol, the museum displays artifacts tracing the history of prison in the state.

Shop in Jindabyne

Located just below the snow line, Jindabyne is a mecca for visitors looking to shop for their winter holidays. Boutiques and big-name stores offer everything from ski apparel and snowboard rentals to groceries, bakeries and gift shop items. But locals think of “Jindy” as more than just a restocking station: Check out the lively bar scene and the perennially popular bowling club and cinema. There’s even a small museum at the Visitors Centre near Nuggets Crossing. In the warmer months, travelers join in with the locals as the town turns its attention from skiing to fishing and walking. For all the information you need on fishing in the Snowy Mountains, research with some local charter crews or providers.
