Perth is warmer than many other Australian destinations during the winter months, with highs of around 17 or 18 degrees and lows of 8 or 9. That makes it an incredibly comfortable place to holiday - neither too hot nor too cold.

Along with its pleasant weather, Perth is made attractive in July by the Revelation Perth International Film Festival. This runs from July 2-12, showcasing contemporary independent films and curated archival programs. The event was started in 1997 and has since gone from strength to strength.

From humble beginnings, the festival has grown to showcase more than 120 international films, which are screened in everything from traditional cinemas through to cafes, bars and galleries around Perth. Be one of the 12,000 guests the festival attracts each year and enjoy discussions, live performances and classes.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder is the largest outback city in Australia, with a sophisticated town centre set against the backdrop of the great outdoors. Not to mention it has an average temperature of 18 degrees in winter, which should provide more than enough reason for you to visit this July.

If you're there during the weekend on July 4 and 5, head to the Goldfields Oasis and Playing Fields for the Goldfields KidsFest. The event gives children and families the chance to take in live performances outside of the major cities, with interactive workshops available to help engage guests. Your little ones can learn about arts and crafts, dancing, science, cooking, circus skills, magic and mining.

The 2014 event saw performances from Samantha Jade, Scooby Doo and Peppa Pig, with an intergalactic theme to help bring a sense of magic to the event. Stay tuned for the 2015 lineup.

There's no doubt that the north is the place to be when winter gets frost at home, and Darwin is especially attractive during July thanks to its Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival. The event stretches throughout the whole month and even nudges into August, featuring the Hot100 Guineas Race Day as the official start of the carnival. Here you'll find horses, trainers and fans lined up to ring in the carnival, with a massive $70,000 prize up for grabs to the winning horse.

Don't miss the SKYCITY Darwin NT Derby Day, which is regarded as one of the best days' racing on the Territory's calendar. There's a Weight for Age Plate up for grabs, and the Buntine Handicap will be one to watch. The winners of these races gain automatic entry into the Carton Mid Darwin Cup, and of course there will be plenty of fashions on the field to enjoy.

As for the main event, stick around Darwin in August for the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup, where there will be 20,000 race-goers and viewers watching from across the world. This is the climax of the entire Carnival and will have plenty of entertainment to accompany all the horsey action.
