Savour the Seafood in Sydney

Sydney is synonymous with seafood thanks to direct fishing-fleet access near the South Pacific. Snapper, tuna, whiting, abalone, prawns, crayfish, rock oysters, blue-swimmer crabs … the list of fresh offerings at the Sydney Fish Market goes on and on. Swing by bright and early to catch the fish auctions. Come mealtime, you can keep it cheap and feast with fish and chips at Bondi Beach or tuck into fine dining at one of the city’s many harbourside restaurants within sight of the Opera House.

Grab a Brew in Hobart

Lately, Tasmania is developing a reputation among oenophiles. But beer lovers have long considered this island worthy of a visit. Hops are cultivated in the Derwent Valley north of Hobart. Take in the crops before quenching your thirst at a brewery tour. While the craft brew scene is burgeoning, it’s the large producers that offer the best tours. The two most popular are James Boags in the north and Cascade in the south. Cascade has the distinction of being the country’s oldest brewery, founded in 1832.

Get Fruity in Brisbane

Given Brisbane’s location in tropical Queensland, it’s no wonder the tropical fruit here is fantastic. Head to the bustling James Street Market for a mouth-watering array of jackfruit, lychees, coconuts, pineapples, mangoes, bananas, avocados, breadfruit, and guavas. Head to a pick-your-own orchard or fruit farm for a hands-on gastronomy adventure. Or for an ode to the humble banana, check out the Bun Mobile Truck. Crowds queue down the block for a steamed bun laden with banana, caramel sauce and salted peanut praline. Whatever you order, the observation deck at the top of Mount Coot-tha makes for a panoramic lunch spot - it's not far out of Brisbane.

Eat Adventurously in Darwin

In this tropical capital city overlooking the Timor Sea, crocodiles are commercially farmed for leather. But adventurous eaters can also feast on crocodile meat. For a different sort of exotic foodie experience, head to the Mindil Beach Sunset Market on the waterfront. It seems half the city flocks to the market come evening, drawn by stalls serving Australian-Asian fusion that globe trots past Thailand, Greece, Brazil and Sri Lanka.

Get Buzzed in Melbourne

Want to start an argument in Melbourne? Ask the locals where you can get the best flat white. You’ll soon see that everyone has a passionate opinion. The city, it seems, is obsessed with coffee: Family-run roasters date back decades, while third-wave coffee shops boast single origin beans. When you tire of sipping your way across the city, consider an immersive “cupping” course or bean-roasting session at Market Lane. Melbourne’s barista training academies also offer tasting classes for those who want to fine-tune their palates.
