Queen Victoria Market

Even if you're not shopping for souvenirs and trinkets, Queen Victoria Market is still a great place to visit for a day out in the Victorian capital. It's open on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday every week, with hours ranging from as early as 6:00 a.m. to as late as 5:00 p.m.

Known as Queen Vic or Vic Market, this vibrant and bustling shopping zone exists in a historic setting that spreads across two city blocks. Pick up fresh local produce to take back home or splurge on cosmetics and clothing. Treat yourself to some freshly baked sourdough loaves from Andrew's Bread Shop or grab a novelty t-shirt from Jeans World.

Ian Potter Centre

The Ian Potter Centre is located at NGV Australia in Federation Square, and is open from Tuesday to Sunday every week. It's the home of Indigenous and non-Indigenous art in Australia, with everything from the colonial period to modern times represented in the vast collection of works.

The NGV has been operating since 1861 and today hosts more than 70,000 pieces of work. Best of all, it's free to explore at your leisure, making it a perfect addition to the list of free things to do in Melbourne.

Australian Centre for the Moving Image

Visit the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, also located in Federation Square, to learn about art, film and digital culture in Australia.

Entry is free and you can discover Australian and international films, live events, exhibitions, creative workshops, festivals and resources. The centre has been operating since 1946 and is now a major tourism, cultural and learning attraction. All things related to moving imagery are celebrated here.

St Kilda Foreshore

St Kilda is one of Melbourne's most beloved suburbs, and its foreshore is an ideal destination for a leisurely day out. Stretch out on the beach and dip in the water to cool off. The boardwalks are draped with palm trees and there's a quaint kiosk at the end of the pier to add to the appeal.

Visit the breakwater near the pier to learn about the colony of penguins who have chosen the area as their home, or cycle or rollerblade down the promenade and take in the serene setting. Various tour companies run eco-friendly tours around the St Kilda area.

Shrine of Remembrance

The Shrine of Remembrance serves to honour and remember those who served and died in the Great War and all armed conflicts and peacekeeping duties since 1918. It's Victoria's largest war memorial of national significance. Of the 114,000 Victorian men and women who served in the Great War, 19,000 did not come back home.

The shrine was officially opened in front of a 300,000-strong crowds in 1934. Other memorials have since been added to the site to honour those who have served in other battles.
